Perfect for complete beginners · IKO Discovery Level 1
Three hours of proper IKO tuition on the shallow, sandy flats of Martello Bay — from your very first kite launch on the beach to your first controlled body drags in the water. The ideal way to find out if kitesurfing is for you.
The Discovery lesson is our most popular first session — a single three-hour block designed to introduce every fundamental you need to start kitesurfing safely. We follow the international IKO Discovery syllabus, adapted around you, so you leave with real, transferable skills rather than a highlight reel. Expect roughly half the time on the sand mastering kite control, and half in the water putting it into practice.
Absolute beginners aged 9 and up. No previous experience is needed — just a reasonable level of fitness and the ability to swim comfortably in deep water. It's equally suited to solo learners, couples booking together, and parents introducing a teen to the sport. If you've tried a bit of kite flying before, this session is also a great way to rebuild fundamentals before pushing into longer courses.
Wind theory and site assessment · setting up and packing down a modern kite · the four-line safety system and quick-release · one-handed steering and the wind window · launching and landing with an assistant · self-rescue basics · water re-launch · your first controlled body drags downwind. Progression is always paced around you and the conditions — most students finish confidently body-dragging.
Our home spot is Martello Bay in Clacton-on-Sea — a shallow, sandy, side-onshore beach on the Tendring peninsula in Essex and one of the safest learning environments in the UK. Depending on wind direction and tide on the day, we may relocate to nearby Walton-on-the-Naze or Point Clear to give you the cleanest possible conditions.
Everything technical is provided: the latest North and Mystic kites and bars sized to the day's wind, board, wetsuit, harness, helmet and impact vest. All kit is regularly serviced and replaced season-on-season so you're always learning on gear that's safe, modern and easy to progress on.
Swimwear, a towel, sun cream, sunglasses, water and a snack. Dress for the weather on the day — layers are your friend in shoulder season. If you own a wetsuit you're welcome to use it, otherwise we'll kit you out from head to toe.
Kitesurfing depends on wind and tide, so lessons are booked around a preferred date window rather than a fixed slot. Share a few dates that work for you and we'll match you to the best forecast. If conditions become unsafe before or during your session, we simply reschedule at no extra cost — you never lose paid time to bad weather.
Zenith Kiting is an IKO-affiliated Pro Kitesurf Centre with our own in-house IKO Examiner, Matty Hurrell. Every student receives an official IKO certificate to log their progress — a passport recognised at over 300 IKO schools worldwide, so you can pick up exactly where you left off anywhere in the world.
Levels covered: IKO Discovery L1 (part L2 subject to progression and conditions on the day).
"Best two days ever. My instructor was clear with instructions and excellent at explaining each step. They built up my skills and confidence so I felt safe and in control at all times. I am now officially addicted to the sport!"
"Matty is an awesome instructor with a true passion for the sport — it comes across in his teaching. Both myself and my daughter were able to body drag at the end of our first session. Can't wait to get back out there."
"From the outset I got a prompt reply and managed to get booked in the same day. The content was aimed at exactly the right tempo for my learning style and I got the maximum training value out of our time together. Highly recommend."
